Key characteristics:
Schild Estate Alma Schild Barossa Chardonnay is a tribute to Alma Schild, wife of founder Ben Schild, celebrating her perseverance and hard work in establishing the family vineyards. This massively flavoursome and complex Barossa Chardonnay is crafted in a deliberately generous style, sourced from the family’s finest parcels, often from the high-altitude Three Springs Vineyard near Rowland Flat. The winemaking aims for a varietally strong wine that retains its refreshing qualities while offering compelling interest and complexity through careful use of oak, stainless steel, lees stirring, and malolactic fermentation.
Tasting Notes:
- Variety: 100% Chardonnay
- Appearance: Pale lemon in appearance.
- Aroma: Aromatically the wine shows notes of powderpuff mineral bath salts, white floral blossom, ripe citrus and a faint glimpse of almond nuttiness, complemented by hints of nectarine and pear.
- Taste: On the palate, flavours of nougat, lemon citrus pith, white peach and nectarine work towards a clear target and a focused finish as the wine drives all the way to the back of the palate. It offers an expansive, complex mouthfeel with soft acidity, balancing minerality, and complex oak support.
- Region: Hailing from Australia’s renowned Barossa Valley, Schild Estate’s vineyards are meticulously spread across the Lyndoch and Rowland Flat subregions, taking full advantage of the region’s patchwork of diverse soils and mesoclimates. The Three Springs vineyard, a key source for this wine, is situated on historic Narrow Road at Rowland Flat, at an altitude of 380 metres above sea level, known for producing lower yields of high-quality fruit.
- Pairing: Great with chicken and mushroom risotto. It also pairs wonderfully with roast pork and apple sauce, or various mushroom dishes.
Overall impression:
This Chardonnay is a testament to the Schild family’s deep connection to the Barossa, offering a harmonious blend of vibrant fruit, refreshing acidity, and a rich, complex texture. It stands as compelling evidence of the Barossa Valley’s prowess in producing world-class Chardonnay.
Extra notes:
- Schild Estate is one of the largest family-owned grapegrowers and winemakers in the Barossa Valley, with a rich history spanning four generations.
- The Alma Schild Chardonnay has received recognition, with various vintages earning awards such as Silver and Bronze at the International Wine Challenge.
